The App: ESPN Scorecenter App
The Device: iPhone/Android
The Price: Free
The Basics: The app acts as a pretty solid representation of what you’d see if you were watching ESPN. It includes up-to-the-minute news about players and teams. What’s really neat is that you can plug in your preferred teams or sports and specifically follow what you want to follow. In addition to basic score tracking, the app can send you push notifications for the start of the game, mid-game or end of game. For the real enthusiasts, the app can send you play-by-play notifications! There are plenty of options for customization.
The Review: I enjoy using this app despite a handful of issues. The user interface could use a little work — right now it’s a little flat. However, I don’t think it’s trying to impress people on that front though. It definitely seems more concerned about basic functionality instead of looking nice. On that end, it’s great. It’s consistently up-to-date and current. The updates often seem to be instantaneous with the game I’m watching. If I watch my team score a touchdown, I’ll often be notified a moment after it happens on my phone. It’s really fast. I don’t mind the flat interface so much since it does exactly what it promises to do. There’s also an extension to the app which allows you to manage your fantasy football league and it integrates perfectly with the base app.
Also, the app does a good job of actually feeling like ESPN…all the way down to the many, many ads! It’s annoying, to say the least. Although the app is free, I’d gladly pay a couple of bucks for an add-free version. For sports fans, it’s a tiny price to pay for an app this useful!
The Final Grade: A-
