The App: I’d Cap That
The Device: iPhone
The Price: Free
Why We Love It: I’d Cap That is one must be one of the simplest apps ever created. There’s no way it cost that much. There’s no way it took very long to design and develop. It’s barebones in the truest sense of the word — the entire app is built around one incredibly simple function that must have been a breeze to implement. All that app does is take your pictures and add a random caption. That’s it. But if it’s so simple, why do I find myself using it all the time?
On the main page of the app, you can either choose a picture from your library or take a new one on the spot. Then the app instantly adds a random caption to the bottom of the image, placing it in a brand new (and usually very R-rated) context. Some captions are better and funnier than others, but they are generally random and versatile enough to function with just about any kind of image. As you can imagine, this app has gotten plenty of play at parties and group get-togethers, especially when alcohol happens to be involved. I also found myself using it frequently on my last road trip, where it proved to be entertaining without booze.
I’d Cap That is so slight in design, execution and experience that it’s almost difficult to recommend (and it is most definitely not for kids). However, it is free and it is fun and I’ve used it more than many of the apps I’ve actually paid money for. Considering how well it’s doing in the App Store, I’m definitely not alone!
