fitness

(Welcome to “Three Things About…”, a new Tapsauce series that will see a Rocksauce Studios team member grilled about a subject of their choice. Today, we’re talking Fitness apps with development genius Robert Blake!)

1. Of all the fitness apps you’ve used, which one is the best? Which one is the best designed and developed?

I’m currently using MyFitnessPal to keep track of my diet and exercise routine. The diet tracking is probably the most intuitive feature as it allows you to scan the barcodes with your smartphone camera and pulls up the nutritional information. The app also has social features that allow you to keep track of your friends’ fitness goals. My wife can input what we had for dinner and then I can go in and copy the meal to my diary. We also track our weight and BMI with our FitBit Aria scale and my wife uses FitBit Ultra to track steps throughout the day, all of which sync with MyFitnessPal. I’m currently holding out for the Fitbit Flex, which is their bracelet version similar to the Jawbone Up or Nike Fuel Band.

I enjoyed many things in 2012, so the only natural thing to do is put them in list format and link to them so you can take my wonderful advice and buy everything below for yourself, your friends and your family. Enjoy!

When it’s time to start to a new website, the default choice tends to be WordPress. Heck, Tapsauce is handled through WordPress! However, it’s far from the only option out there. Let’s take a look at some of the lesser known options.

Wolf CMS

Wolf has been my go-to CMS for many years. So many years that I remember back when it used to be called Frog! As the official sebsite states, Wolf CMS is a lightweight, fast, simple and powerful. It’s build on PHP and you can choose from three databases: MySQL, SQLite 3 of PostgreSQL. The set-up process is quick and painless thanks to the web-based install wizard. All you have to do is provide connection details and you’re off to the races! The layout of the admin console is fairly straightforward and the Pages option provides a tree view of your entire website. Then there’s the incredibly useful Snippets, which allows you ro reuse code on other pages.  You can also manage your site layout and upload files straight from the admin console, which is pretty handy. Wolf also allows you to add custom plugins built by the community and helps you build your own. Wolf is a great option if all you need is a way to manage a few pages and may have to give control to someone else in the future. On top of all that, it’s free!

iOS 6 is here! The iPhone 5 is here! Here are my favorite features from the new Apple operating system so far:

Maps

Over the weekend I tried out the new Maps on a two and half hour drive to Fayetteville, AR. The turn by turn voice navigation is as what you’d expect with a Magellan or TomTom GPS. The visual cues allow you easily identify upcoming turns and surrounding streets. While your phone is locked, you have a live view of your route. After I reached my destination my battery lost about 40% of its charge, so have a car charger handy.

The App: Just Landed

The Device: iPhone

The Price: Free

Why We Love it: Remember that episode of Seinfeld where George and Kramer are headed to the airport to pick up Jerry and Elaine, but in order to settle a previous bet, George must be be there on time to get credit for the pickup? If George only had an iPhone equipped with the Just Landed app! Just Landed is by far the most gorgeous iOS flight tracker app that I’ve come across with a nice color scheme and day and nighttime animations.

(We love apps. We make them, after all! Our Favorite Apps is a series where we briefly take a look at an app that we really like.)

Overwhelmed by your Facebook friends? Flooded by a constant stream of tweets? Think Path’s 150 friend limit is still too much? Then try out Pair an iPhone and Android app that is meant for just you and your significant other. Dubbed Super SMS by the developers, the app allows both users to text each other, share photos and videos, and also allows you to sketch pictures. You can even send your current location for impromptu rendezvous.

Ever wanted to know how to make the perfect mint julep or fold a dollar bill into the shape of a shirt? Then check out Snapguide! Snapguide allows you browse hundreds of user submitted “How To Guides,” including topics such as cooking or gardening.

To get started with Snapguide, you can either use the iPhone app or the official website. Both the website and app have a beautiful and intuitive user interface that makes browsing through hundreds of guides effortless. Of course, you can “like” the guides and you can follow other Snapguide users and see what they have liked.

The Snapguide iOS app gives you the ability to create and submit your own how to guides. The app will ask you what supplies are needed and then you upload video, photos or text to illustrate how to complete the task. It’s that simple!
