The Designer: Brandon Schaffner
The Life Story: Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Brandon Schaffner is a self taught graphic designer who earned a BFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2004. After graduation, he worked for the school for over two years as a web designer, eventually choosing to return home after nearly a decade away to pursue a career in app design, landing a designer job at Appiction before migrating to Rocksauce Studios. Brandon lists lowbrow art, skater culture, street art, tattoo art and hot rod and custom culture among his many influences and has consistently wowed clients with his logos, websites and brand identities, all of them stunning and all of them completed on time.
The Quote: “I’d rather shoot for the moon and make miss, than aim for the gutter and make it…”
The Project: BeerPong
The Tools: Illustrator as a layout tool and object designer and Photoshop for details and textures.
The Process: The client didn’t have any preconceived ideas, but they wanted it to be different and to stand out. Judging from their personalities, they obviously weren’t afraid to do things differently or take risks! We ended up going with a mash-up of “wild west” and “steampunk.” The biggest challenge was the main screen.
We wanted it to look and act like a revolver (which is how you would make your selections), but making the display work with the functionality we wanted and keeping it in theme was a pretty big challenge. We’re certainly doing something right, since we also did their merchandise and website design! The cool thing about BeerPong is that it’s a fairly flexible brand that can evolve and change their style without having to do a complete revamp of their image.
