iPhone 5 pre-orders topped two million within the first 24 hours of them being available. That’s not just an Apple record (the 4S sold one million in 24 hours last year), it’s an industry record. Compare it to the Samsung Galaxy S III, which has been moving 200,000 a day and reached twenty million sold at the three month mark. The pre-orders were so overwhelming that not everyone will receive theirs on the 21st, with some orders being backed up into October. Anyone questioning Apple’s dominance in this field has just been shut down.

Samsung didn’t take the iPhone 5 news lying down. Instead, they’re only digging in and continuing their bitter war with Apple. Check out this ad that hit only days after Apple’s press conference:

Ah, the claws have come out! The ad is effective, albeit incredibly misleading. Although the basic specs are correct, the Galaxy S III column lists all of the smartphone’s features while the iPhone 5 column neglects many of the new features that are being packaged into the phone. Still, you’ve got to enjoy an ad this rage-fueled. Not the swipe at Apple “geniuses” in at the top. Note the bright and shiny Galaxy and the dark, dead-looking iPhone. Note how Samsung is using a “standard micro USB plug” and Apple has a “totally different plug.” Even though they’re ouf of court, it looks like these two are going to be enemies for quite some time.

Oh, and Samsung announced that the Galaxy S IV will hit in March. They just did so without Apple’s dramatic flair.

The bitter admiration Android fans often seem to have for Apple is best summed up in this Geek Culture comic:

As last week showed us, not everyone is one board with this thing. In fact, this hilarious (and due to some minor profanity, slightly NSFW) “banned iPhone 5 promo” does a pretty solid job of explaining why some people are underwhelmed.
