Here’s the thing about Angry Birds: Star Wars — I groaned when I first heard about. However, if the recently released gameplay trailers are any indication, Rovio has delivered. Again.

Most gimmicky licensed deals like this are just that: gimmicks, something familiar given a new coat of paint. Star Wars stopped being special about a decade ago, so seeing it team up with the most popular mobile game of all time was no surprise. After all, the collective world is used to seeing the Star Wars universe sold out. However, Rovio, despite their vast merchandising empire, has yet to phone it what truly matters: their actual games. Angry Birds: Rio was a pleasant surprise and Angry Birds: Space was less of a sequel and more of a full-blown reinvention of how the gameplay functioned. In the new trailers, it looks like that’s also the case here. The Star Wars setting doesn’t appear to be simple window dressing; Rovio has taken the iconography of the films and has worked it directly into the the environments and the characters themselves, creating a game that looks like it will require all kinds of new strategy.

I never thought I’d be interested in Star-Wars-anything ever again…until I saw this gameplay…and until Disney scooped up the rights to the series. Is this a new beginning of a new age for that long-ag0, far-away galaxy?
