Whenever you bring up Ridley Scott’s classic film ‘Alien,’ one scene tends to spring to mind immediately. Surely you remember it: the crew of the Nostromo gathers around the table for breakfast following a harrowing stopover on LV-421,only for Kane to have a baby alien burst out of his chest. It’s one of the most famous movie scenes of all time…and a new Android app will let you re-enact it yourself.

I’ll be the first to admit that writing at length about one of Rocksauce Studios’ new apps may present a conflict of interest, since it would ruffle inside feathers if I said bad things about them and may raise outside eyebrows if I praised them to high heavens. Thankfully, I don’t have to worry about this since my company makes top notch apps that I love using outside of the office.

Our latest creation continues the trend of “awesome apps that everyone should download.” World, meet Card-O-Matic. Card-O-Matic, meet the world!

(There are now over 500,000 apps available for download. Here’s a look at one of them. Welcome to App Spotlight.)

The App: Life360

The Device: HTC Incredible (Android)

The Price: Free

What It Does: On one level, Life360 is like having your personal spy network, letting you obsessively track the movement of your family members. Really, though, this is an app that could save lives. Life360 allows you to know where your loved ones are at all times, pinpointing their exact location on a map. It displays the closest hospitals and police stations. It lets you send out group messages to your family members, either as a check-in to let everyone know you’re safe or an alert to let them know that you’re in trouble. Life360 exists to help keep you and your family safe and aware of everyone’s status in a moment of crisis.

One of the major conundrums of our modern age is how we view the prices of apps. “99 cents? Are you kidding me? That’s outrageous!” You need to say that at the top of your lungs while shaking your fist at your iPhone for full effect. We see a Blu-ray for $20 and see a bargain. We buy a movie ticket for $10 without blinking an eye. Many magazines cost upwards of $5 for a single issue. For whatever reason, though, we are excessively hesitant to drop that single dollar on an app or game. “What if it’s a bad app? I’ll be wasting a whole dollar!

It may seems like I’m making fun of the people who flip out over spending a buck on an app, but I fully sympathize. I don’t download an app until I’ve thought it through, read dozens of reviews in the store, read reviews online and thought it through some more. Although a great app can offer many hours of entertainment or make your life significantly easier, it’s still a little square symbol on your phone. It doesn’t technically exist. On some subconscious level, it feels like your hard-earned dollar has vanished into the ether. Why waste that dollar on something that isn’t a sure thing?

There’s been a lot of press lately about Meal Snap, an innovative new app that allows users to take a picture of their food and receive fairly accurate calorie counts based on the photo. It seems like magic, doesn’t it? The app is SO smart, that it not only knows the calories of every food imaginable, it can recognize food on sight.
