(Talksauce is a weekly editorial that represents the opinions of Tapsauce editor-in-chief Jacob Hall, not Rocksauce Studios. If he says something stupid, blame him and him alone.)

When I attended Fantastic Fest last week, my plan was to observe how people were using apps and mobile technology to shape their film festival experience. This ended up being more difficult than I thought. It wasn’t a case of no one using mobile tech during the festival, it was a case of everyone using it. By day two, I stopped keeping track of what everyone was using because it had become second nature. Your smartphone wasn’t anything special: it was a necessary tool to properly enjoy the fest.

For the next eight days, its going to be a little quieter around the Rocksauce Studios. With so many filmmakers and film buffs on staff, it’s only natural that a handful of our hardworking guys and gals would use their hard-earned vacation time to attend Austin’s own Fantastic Fest, a genre film festival unlike any other. But don’t worry, Tapsauce readers! I’ll still be around with daily news reports and I’ll also be testing out the official Fantastic Fest app on the ground at the fest. On top of that, I’ll be profiling how social media and apps have changed the fest-going experience. Not to mention, you’ll still have the rest of the great Tapsauce staff around to keep you informed and happy!

And now onto the news!

You may have noticed that things were a little quiet around Tapsauce for the past week or so. That’s because I — along with a significant chunk of the Rocksauce Studios staff — was attending Fantastic Fest, an Austin-based film festival that showcases the best genre cinema from around the world. Don’t worry…this article will not be an excuse to bore you tech fans with talk of Koran revenge movies and Spanish alien invasion romantic comedies. Rather, this is an excuse to talk about how mobile technology and social networking have integrated themselves into the film festival experience in a truly significant way.

For one thing, it’s difficult to imagine what film festivals were like before Twitter. Okay, I’ll go there: for me, it’s impossible to imagine a film festival before I could read 140-character posts from my fellow attendees about what was going on at any given moment.
